Washing Machine and Dryer Cabinet — Stacked, Side by Side or Separate?
Roomart Team · June 2026 · 8 min read
Short answer: stacked saves the most floor space — but only if ceiling height allows it. Side by side is more comfortable day-to-day but needs more wall width. Keeping them completely separate is rarely the best option.
Once you have both a washing machine and a dryer, the question isn't whether to get a cabinet — it's which configuration actually works for your space. Two appliances standing openly in a corner look unfinished. A proper cabinet changes everything about how the room feels.
The good news: there's a clean solution for almost every room situation. You just need to know which layout works where.
Stacked vs. side by side — what's the real difference?
Stacked — laundry tower
- Only ~65 × 65 cm floor footprint
- Ideal for bathrooms, hallways, small rooms
- Dryer at comfortable working height
- Tidiest overall appearance
- Needs at least 195 cm ceiling height
- Pull-out shelf makes loading much easier
Side by side
- Both appliances at the same level
- Easier access to the dryer
- No ceiling height restriction
- Needs at least 130 cm wall width
- Works well in utility rooms with space
- Better for rooms with low ceilings
Ceiling over 195 cm and limited floor space? → Stacked. Low ceiling or wide room available? → Side by side. Both work equally well with a cabinet — the difference is only in the layout.
What actually matters when buying a cabinet
Measurements — the one thing that can't be wrong
| Layout | Interior width | Interior depth | Room ceiling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stacked | min. 62–65 cm | min. 60–65 cm | min. 195 cm |
| Side by side | min. 130 cm total | min. 60–65 cm | no restriction |
The drain hose behind the washing machine needs 5–10 cm clearance from the wall. Always add this to your depth measurement — otherwise the cabinet fits on paper but not in reality.
Doors or open shelving?
In bathrooms and hallways, always doors — for appearance and splash protection. In a utility room or basement, open shelving is cheaper and gives better ventilation. If you have children at home: always doors, to keep detergent pods out of reach.
Pull-out shelf — worth it?
Yes — almost always. The shelf at drum height serves as a landing spot for the laundry basket when loading and unloading. Once you've used one, going back feels wrong. Especially with a dryer on top, it's close to essential.
Which dryer works inside a closed cabinet?
- Condenser dryer — collects water in a tank, no external hose needed. Works well in any closed cabinet with minimal ventilation.
- Heat pump dryer — best suited for enclosed cabinets. Less heat output, no venting required, more energy efficient.
- Vented dryer — needs a hose routed outside. More complicated in a closed cabinet. Best avoided if you're still choosing your appliances.

Frequently asked questions
Can you stack a washer and dryer inside a cabinet?
Yes — it's the most compact solution and standard in many homes. You need a cabinet with at least 62–65 cm interior width, 60 cm interior depth, and enough height for both appliances plus the doors. Free ceiling height should be at least 195 cm. Condenser or heat pump dryers work best in enclosed cabinets.
Washer dryer cabinet with doors — what should I look for?
Doors make the biggest visual difference — the appliances disappear completely. Make sure the doors open wide enough to access the machine drum comfortably. Soft-close hinges protect the cabinet long-term. And a pull-out shelf at drum height makes loading noticeably more comfortable.
How wide does a side-by-side washer dryer cabinet need to be?
For two standard 60 cm appliances you need at least 125–130 cm interior width — plus a little clearance for hoses and cables on each side. Our wall units from 127 cm exterior width accommodate most standard appliances. Always measure your actual machines before ordering.
Dryer on top or bottom in a stacked cabinet?
Almost always on top — the dryer is lighter than the washing machine and doesn't need to handle spin cycle vibrations. Washing machine at the bottom means the drum door is at an ergonomic height — no bending to load laundry. The only trade-off is reaching slightly higher for the dryer, which the pull-out shelf addresses.
What does a good washer and dryer cabinet cost?
A basic laundry tower with open shelving starts at €359. With doors and a pull-out shelf: €469. With side storage: €559. Complete utility room solutions with drawers and more width range from €1,099 to €1,494.
Do you ship to the UK and other European countries?
Yes — we ship across Europe from Germany. Delivery times vary by model, typically 5–15 working days. Shipping is free on all wall units and cabinet systems.
